A Rare Find

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I don’t remember who said it, but a fellow card blogger mentioned he was sticking strictly to Hobby Packs (Update: It was Mario at Wax Heaven). After a string of some really horrible retail busts, I’m agreeing with him. It’s just not worth it. If I’m going to put down my hard earned cash, I want the odds tipped (however slightly) in my favor.

My resolve has already been tested and I have already given in to temptation. While doing some fatherly shopping (picking up diapers) at the local Meijer (a Midwest Walmart Clone), I came across this:

2007-08 SP Basketball Box

Huh? I was immediately attracted to the recognizable “SP” logo and the Upper Deck logo all over the outer plastic wrapper, but something didn’t seem right. I had never seen a box of “SP” before. No “SP Authentic” or “SPx”, just “SP”. I was intrigued, so I threw one in the cart and kept shopping. Since I want all the chances at getting some LeBron James cards, Upper Deck is my only chance. You’ve got to go with what you’ve got.

When I got home, I checked Upper Deck’s site, which was most unhelpful. No mention of a “SP”. The Checklist site was even worse. As far as I could tell, Upper Deck doesn’t claim ownership to this line. Very strange.

Finally, after a little more sleuthing and searching, I came across 2007 Basic SP. This is a SP Authentic parallel, it appears. Having been out of the hobby for a while, I’m still a little fuzzy on what that means, but I’ve now got 8 Basic SP packs to break. I’ll probably jump the queue to post one or two of these soon. They cards don’t look bad, but they’re certainly not on the level of SPx or Authentic. A poor-man’s version, I guess.

Just a heads up

One of the things I’ve really enjoyed about reading other people’s blogs are the community interaction. The trades, the gifts, the comments, I love it all. I’m also trying to be a part of it, as best I can.

With regard to the cards I break out of a pack and feature on Busting Wax, unless I mention otherwise, it’s available for trade (or sale, if that suits your fancy). I’m pretty easy to deal with and very reliable and honest (100% feedback rating on eBay!). Just let me know if you see something you like and what you’re interested in. You can always hit me up on the contact form (found here).

What I’m looking for is a little harder to nail down. If you’ve got Cleveland cards (Indians, Browns, Cavs), especially LeBron James (duh) and Travis Hafner cards, I’m interested. I also collect former Ohio State Buckeye players (mostly football), Eddie George being a favorite. Like I said, I’m easy to deal with, so don’t hesitate making me an offer.

Thanks for reading. I’m really hoping to have a much regular posting schedule now. I’ll have some 2008 stuff up as soon as I work through my backlog of previous busts!

2007 - UD Masterpieces Baseball - Bust #0008

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

The next pack rip in my queue is a pack of 2007 Upper Deck Masterpieces Baseball. This is one of my favorite lines for 2007. It’s also probably my favorite pack to pick up at Walmart. Nice and cheap, and inside a blister pack, safe from pack searchers. On with the pack!

2007 - Press Pass Football - Bust #0007

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

We’re skipping the 2006 Donruss Gridiron pack that came in the Target box because it stunk, but the following pack is my own personal hell. I usually don’t buy Press Pass packs, but this was one of my Target box packs, so let’s go with it.

2005 - Leaf Rookies & Stars - Football - Bust #0006

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

I’m back from the dead, and not a moment too soon. I’ve got some 2008 Baseball to bust, but I’ve got a backlog of previous busts that I never got around to posting. So these are going to be coming fast and furious!

It’s the next pack of the Target Box, this time it’s a 2005 Leaf Rookies and Stars. I don’t mind the Leaf line, but I’ve never really collected very much of it, so I’m willing to give it a try. I still don’t know if this pack was the “Bonus” advertised on the box or if someone tried to add an extra pack to their purchase, but either way, let’s rip into it:

Huge apologies

Friday, February 8th, 2008

I must apologize for the absolute lack of posts for almost two weeks. My wife got sick last week and I was taking care of her and the kids, when whatever super bug knocked her out finally made its way into my system.

It took me out for about a week as well, but now I seemed to have recovered for the most part. I have a bunch of posts ready to go, I just need to make a few adjustments and tweaks. But I should have the new content flowing regurlarly soon. I think I may be heading to a card show tomorrow, too, so hopefully I’ll be able to grab a couple 2008 packs to bust here on the site.

Thanks to everyone how has been checking regularly without any new updates. They are forthcoming, I promise!
